THE Tasmanian Government has released the draft Climate Change (State Action) Bill 2008 for public comment. The Bill makes Tasmania only the second State outside South Australia to legislate a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target. The Bill sets an ambitious target for Tasmania to reduce its emissions by at least 60 per cent of 1990 levels by 2050. It also provides for setting interim or sector-based targets through regulation. The Bill establishes the high level, independent Tasmanian Climate Action Council to provide expert advice to Government. The Council will have representation from science, industry, government and the broader community.
You are invited to comment on the draft Climate Change (State Action) Bill 2008. The consultation period is for two weeks from Sunday 1 June to Monday 16 June 2008.
