Senior Government Appointments Select Committee
THE Legislative Council will hold a Select Committee inquiry into senior government appointments.
The committee will investigate best practice for appointment of individuals to fill senior Tasmanian public sector executive positions.
It will also examine the circumstances surrounding the appointment of a magistrate in Tasmania last year.
Committee Chairman, Huon MLC Paul Harriss said it was important to examine such matters in order to ensure public confidence is maintained when senior positions are filled by the State Government.
“In recent times there have been a number of appointments that would appear to have had little, if any transparency,” Mr Harriss said.
“These positions come with substantial salaries and attractive conditions so it is important that taxpayers know they are getting the best individual for the position and that the best process has been undertaken.”
“In addition, last year we have reports of one individual being nominated for a magisterial position, but another name being accepted by Cabinet,” Mr Harriss said.
“On this issue, there are questions that still remain unanswered.”
The Committee invites written submissions or requests to present verbal evidence from interested individuals or organisations to be submitted by contacting Dr Colin Huntly, Clerk of Committees at the Legislative Council on 6233 2311.
