Fury at Ralphs Bay

The Save Ralphs Bay lobby group has vowed to fight the controversial plan strenuously. Spokeswoman Cassy O’Connor said developers continued to defy community opposition and common sense. She said Walker failed to disclose that scientific evidence already existed confirming the bay’s sediments were contaminated with heavy metals and it was a high risk area for coastal acid sulphate soils. Walker continued to demonstrate a wilful lack of understanding of the area’s fragile environment and the River Derwent’s slow recovery, she said. “Decades of pollution from the zinc works and paper mill upstream have deposited mercury, arsenic, lead, zinc, cadmium and copper in the Ralphs Bay sediments,” she said.
