LAST WEEK, at least three detonations by terrorists sent enormous columns of smoke that found their way to the lungs of Launceston’s residents.

Windows and doors closed we the victims of this massive assault will endure a night of dry sore throats, some have asthma and their night will be fearful.

Ironically as tourism icon Targa draws thousands of people to our jeweled island paradise, evil forces within the forest industry conspire to destroy not only our forests and the magnificent life contained within, but smear a brown stain across the spectacular autumn skies as a backdrop to our city.

While Mayor Van Zetten speaks of renewing the wood heater replacement program in an effort to clean Launceston’s air, forestry strives to cover our city with a dense dark covering of acrid smoke that all the wood heaters in Australia would find hard to match.

These relentless attacks on our community must stop now.

Unsustainable forestry should go the way of the dinosaurs.

No doubt the LGH was busy as our Premier went to Melbourne trying to promote his beloved football.

Perhaps he knew this was coming and was there to inhale some fresh air?

You may have received similar images last week; this cloud from Forestry Tas’s burn-off hung around east of Launceston all day. There was quite a haze in the city. The largest cloud appeared south of Mt Barrow, taken from West Launceston.

And, David Leigh

I was at a dinner party the other night and somebody remarked about Forestry Tasmania having a burn off and how it had spoilt Targa. After further discussion, I realised that half the table thought that the smoke, filling our lungs, was from back burning of grasses, to prevent bush fires. In case there are any doubts as to what causes the smoke I enclose the following pictures I took at Morinna a few days back. Obviously, the back burn got out of control.
