MEDIA RELEASE Sunday April 27th 2008

PUBLIC MEETING TASMANIA: A FAILED DEMOCRACY? at The Tailrace Centre, West Tamar Rd. Riverside on Tuesday April 29th 2008 beginning at 7.00pm

Bob McMahon, who will be chairing the public meeting, said that “while this meeting may initially appear to be another in a long line of well attended and successful public meetings and community
demonstrations here in Tasmania, it is substantially different because it reflects not only community concerns but the concerns of mainstream political players in Tasmania who, in partnership with the
broad community, intend to do something about the appalling state of government here.”

“I have never witnessed such a tsunami of disgust with the way Premier Paul Lennon and his government operates. This public meeting is about directing political change. Paul Lennon’s days are numbered and his government is growing more and more dysfunctional”, he concluded.

In addition to guest speakers Terry Martin (Independent MLC), Kim Booth (Greens MHA), Jeremy Rockcliff (MHA and Acting Leader of the Liberal Party), Dr Warwick Raverty (formerly of the RPDC Pulp Mill Assessment Panel), Lindsay Tuffin (journalist with the Mercury and editor of the online news service Tasmanian Times), Dr Michael Aizen the former head of the Tasmanian branch of the AMA, has requested to speak.

“There needs to be greater evidence-based decision making around major projects and greater access to ministers and senior bureaucrats by community groups”, stated Dr. Aizen.

Journalist Lindsay Tuffin said: “I intend to talk about bearing witness to Public Truth. At the meeting I want to explain how Truth has been trampled in the Public Sphere of Tasmania, why it matters
and how we might begin to restore it to its rightful place.”

Spokesperson for the organizers, Mr Rod Hutchins, reflected on the historical nature of the public meeting. “The interest is overwhelming. This meeting has been called for by everyone. We are witnessing a breaking down of the traditional barriers between a diverse range of interest and community groups.

The behaviour of Lennon and his government is uniting the people of Tasmania against him”.
