Green with anger …

I FOUND the subject of Maria Rae’s article entitled ‘Green with anger over job snub’ quite disturbing. (The Mercury 15/2: HERE)

A senior marine research scientist, Professor Karen Edyvane, has claimed to the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal that she was overlooked for a job interview, for a job to which she appears to have been very well suited, because of a perception that she may have been a member of the Greens and that she may have released a sensitive study, showing major losses of kelp forests, unofficially to Greens environment spokesman Nick McKim. (She has strongly denied both)

Of course the claims are unproven and the Tribunal will need to consider the evidence very carefully but the claims have the potential to erode public confidence in the way a critically important natural resource is being managed for the future.Where there is smoke there is sometimes a fire.

The Tribunal will have to been seen to be conducting the enquiry with great rigour and openness.
