At a time when Tasmanian students are being failed by the State’s education system, the State Government must come clean on why it is considering to withdraw an essential teaching resource.
Shadow Minister for Education, Sue Napier, said Education Minister, David Bartlett, must publically release a discussion paper on why the Department of Education Library and Information Centre in Hobart should be closed.
“Teachers are very angry about the decision to close this essential service that loans more than 8500 items a year to teachers,” Mrs Napier said.
“This appears to be another example of the Minister penny pinching by stealth, with many teachers not knowing about these extreme plans until the last minute.
“A discussion paper has reportedly recommended closing the library by the end of the year, this paper must be released publically before this decision and the Minister must give an absolute guarantee that no action will be taken until an open and frank consultation is carried out with teachers.
“Tasmanian teachers are very concerned about this move towards online resourcing and the Minister must think twice about the impact this will have on students, who are already at the back of the class, if teacher resourcing is to be cut back.”
