Oil Breaching $100US per Barrel. Federal Braddon Candidates invited to comment on Energy policies. Screening of critically acclaimed documentary ‘A Crude Awakening’

Oil is about to breach an historic $100US per Barrel and there is no proactive plan from any political party to deal with rising energy costs just one week out from a Federal election.

Early last week George W Bush said ‘I believe oil prices are going up because the demand for oil outstrips the supply for oil. Oil is going up because developing countries still use a lot of oil. Oil is going up because we use too much oil, and the capacity to replace reserves is dwindling. That’s why the price of oil is going up’.

Peak Oil Alternatives and the Association for the Study of Peak Oil (Tasmania) will be hosting an Energy Election Forum and Film Night special at The Burnie Metro this Wednesday Night (21/11/07) at 7pm.

‘We are inviting The Federal Braddon Candidates to speak on their energy policies and we will then be screening ‘A Crude Awakening’ at the Burnie Metro this Wednesday. The documentary is of a similar bent to Al Gores ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. It is focusing on the role energy plays in our global society’ said Trevor Leaman from Peak Oil Alternatives.

As Oil is about to breach $100US per Barrel and with a Federal Election only a week away it is very timely to be discussing rising energy costs and their impact on rural and regional communities. Faith Birol, Chief Economist for the International Energy Agency stated about rising oil prices last week; ‘I am sorry to say this but we are headed for really bad days’. The IEA figures show that extraction is globally peaking at about 85 million barrels per day.

Braddon Federal Election candidates will be in attendance to present their parties respective energy policies in regards to rising energy costs. Addressing how the transportation and agriculture sector will cope with ever increasing costs impacting through the supply chain because of rising fuel costs is a key concern for many industries and residents of the Braddon electorate.

Scott White from ASPO Tasmania said; ‘ Oil getting into triple figures has never happened before and is a scary precedent to be going into without any Federal or State leadership. Our Federal candidates for Braddon really need to present a clear agenda to the constituents outlining how their party will deal with Peak Oil. It is economic suicide to go into something of this magnitude blindfolded and yet it is an almost impossible task to get politicians to comment on Peak Oil’.

The fund raiser screening of the critically acclaimed ‘A Crude Awakening’ will start at 7pm at the Burnie Metro, with food, wine and raffles on the night to highlight the historic event of oil hitting $100US a Barrel. Tickets are $15 full price or $10 concession. All money raised will go towards buying public information resources for the North West community to be located at the North West Environment Centre.
