Dr Alison Bleaney Ref Examiner Oct 31- Call for stricter laws on pollution.
Not only is it unacceptable to have ecologically dangerously high levels of simazine (behaves like atrazine and 0.1 ppb causes hormone disruption) consistently in major waterways for over 3 months (Macquarie River feeds Launceston), we now await word from Minister Llewellyn’s Department as to how and when the public will be informed of continuing results.
Waiting for an all-clear only as they suggest, is unacceptable – all water users need to know the level and timing of contamination.
Assurances that no offences had occurred in a forestry coupe under the Control of Use Act re Agricultural Chemicals, show up the inability of current practices and regulations to protect our environment and people.
Protective, enforceable regulations need to be introduced as soon as possible.
