New research showing that a clear majority of Tasmanian voters oppose the proposed Tamar Valley pulp mill has further embarrassed both the Liberal and Labor Parties, according to the Wilderness Society.
The first statewide poll in Tasmania conducted about the proposed pulp mill found 54 per cent of people are opposed to its and only 37 per cent are in favour. The poll was conducted by EMRS. 1022 respondents across Tasmania were asked about their attitude to the pulp mill on October 30 and 31.
“The poll shows that a clear majority of Tasmanians is opposed to the pulp mill,” said TWS state coordinator, Geoff Law. “This is a great boost to the campaign in the run-up to Saturday’s anti-pulpmill rally in Hobart.”
“The poll highlights the failure of the Liberal and Labor parties to grapple effectively with climate change. Logging to feed the mill will generate greenhouse gases equivalent to putting an additional 2.3 million cars on the road each year.”
“The pulp-mill assessment ignored the mill’s inevitable greenhouse emissions.”
“Instead of protecting native forests to lock up millions of tonnes of carbon, both major political parties ignore the science and are backing the pulp mill.”
Logging needed to feed the pulp mill would generate levels of greenhouse gases conservatively estimated to be equivalent to 2 per cent of Australia’s annual emissions.
