Ben Quin Makes Public Commitment to Independence
Independent Candidate for Lyons, Ben Quin, has confirmed that he will not rejoin the Liberal Party if elected as the Independent Member for Lyons.
Mr. Quin said that many electors had been asking him whether he would direct preferences and if he would remain as an Independent if elected.
“I am on the public record now with my commitments in relation to these matters, said Mr. Quin.
“I will not direct my preferences to any party nor enter into any discussions with any other party about preferences. I will leave this matter to individual electors to decide.
“I will not rejoin the Liberal Party and the Liberal Party cannot be assured of my support in the Federal Parliament if I am elected.”
“The feed-back I have been receiving from the electorate is that there is a real desire for an independent voice in Lyons. Voters are disillusioned with the standard of governance provided by the major parties in Tasmania and feel disenfranchised. The pulp mill saga has simply brought this matter to a head.
“People in Lyons can be assured that as an Independent, I will never give up the right to speak openly about issues that I believe reflect the opinions of the majority of electors in Lyons.
“Fearless and open debate is the heart of a democracy. It is not acceptable for any group to be told that their collective opinion does not count.”
