Elise Archer, who stood in Denison as a Liberal candidate at the last state election, told Tasmanian Times that as the party doesn’t endorse candidates at local government level she is standing as an independent.
An elector poll will be conducted in conjunction with the council election. Voters will be asked for Yes/No answers to three questions, as follows:
Do you agree with the process used to assess the proposed pulp mill in the Tamar Valley?
Do you agree with the type of pulp mill proposed?
Do you agree with the location of a pulp mill of the proposed type in the Tamar Valley?

The enrolment for this election is 35,969 and in past elections a little over 50% of the electorate, (which equates to Denison), voted. One of the arguments in favour of the mill poll was that it might increase overall voter participation. It might be worth noting that while councillors often refer to their electors as ‘ratepayers’, a word some associate with owning land, the election is in fact open for any registered resident of Hobart to vote in.
Simultaneous postal council elections will be held statewide from Tuesday 16 to Tuesday 30 October, dates which it would appear will be clear of a Federal election clash if not from the associated hype.
The swamping of local issues by Federal battles was referred to recently in a Council debate on fixing the date of local elections. If these fears are not to be played out now those candidates who don’t already have a clear and impressive platform will have to work hard at attracting votes in the next fortnight.
