Actually one gripe I’ve got with council is that they pay too much attention to certain areas – Salamanca, and the central city block. We’re only one block away from the CBD but even in the City Heart days, which we put money in for, we weren’t included. It was all for the mall and the waterfront.
Local Government Elections
Reality Check in Hobart City
Saturday Morning 27th October
Questions
Are you aware that local council elections are on?
Have you voted/are you going to vote?
Can you name anyone standing?
Do you have particular issues, concerns?
Gary (Hobart electorate) Sole trader.
Yes, I’m aware, very aware. No, I haven’t voted yet – the forms are at home, ready to do.
Valentine, who does a fantastic job. I’ll be voting for him. And Wilkinson.
You know you should be asking me about the federal election – it’s a big distraction.
I don’t think people realize the amount of graffiti and how much it costs to clean it up. It’s phenomenal and it’s happening all the time. And they don’t get booked. Rap over the knuckles and they’re back again.
Amanda: (Clarence electorate) at work on building site, directing traffic.
Yes, I’ve voted. To be honest I think it’s all rigged anyway. The ones that are on now stay on. They’re out to feather their own nests in any election.
Gopi Ram: (Hobart) at work in his restaurant/take away, CBD.
I’ve heard that elections are on but I’m not voting because I’m too busy working. I don’t really have time for thinking about this. I’m sorry.
Jason: (Sorell) Yeah, I know about it being on. I’m old enough to vote – I’m eighteen. I haven’t voted and I’m not going to. Well, I don’t understand about it all that well.
Chris: (Hobart) at work at own retail business on Elizabeth St, north of Melville St.
I’m aware that they’re on but with the Federal elections I haven’t paid any attention. I’ve noticed some signs, but seen nothing in the newspaper.
I haven’t voted yet. I will.
Umm – Valentine, he’s standing isn’t he?
Issues? I don’t know. Well, yes, we’re definitely affected but I tend to look at bigger issue things.
Actually one gripe I’ve got with council is that they pay too much attention to certain areas – Salamanca, and the central city block. We’re only one block away from the CBD but even in the City Heart days, which we put money in for, we weren’t included. It was all for the mall and the waterfront.
And another thing – if road works have to be done up here it takes forever, but if it’s on the main city block they get organized and do it overnight. Our businesses are just as important to us you know.
I realize they’re trying to create a mini Eastlands down there, but there are a lot of excellent businesses just a block away.
Bridie (Hobart) Retired.
I’m aware – just. No, of course I know. I’ve seen faces I recognise like Eric Hayes. I’m glad to have the opportunity to have my say on opposing Gunns’ pulp mill. They’ve included that. It’s so important to protect our forests especially when we don’t know what the future holds.
I haven’t voted yet. Well the forms haven’t come – unless they were delivered in the last two days. I’ve been busy with a new grandchild.
Caroline: (Glenorchy) Hairdresser.
Yes, I know, the forms are at home. They have to be in by Tuesday I think. I’ll be voting.
Bob Vervaart – I’ve met him many times and he always seems nice. He’ll stop and talk to you.
Well, we could do with some security at Glenorchy Plaza. There’s always something going on. Arguments at the very least, and it’s getting worse. It’s starting to get out of control.
I wonder if the council could pay some-one to walk around the plaza. The police can’t do it. I talk to a lot of people in my work, and it’s very much a concern. There’s no security at all.
But I love the way Moonah’s going ahead – like North Hobart with the restaurants. It’s getting there. And out where I live, near the lagoon at Granton there’s one big issue. We wanted a park but one person objecting meant it didn’t happen. I don’t think one person should be able to stop what a whole community wants. And the flyer for the consultation night came on the same day as the meeting. I couldn’t get there.
The Council itself, well I think it’s improving. I’m pretty happy with the Glenorchy Council really.
