FIVE members of the Legislative Council, Paul Harriss, Ivan Dean, Greg Hall, Tania Rattray-Wagner and Ruth Forrest and two Liberal MHA’s, Peter Gutwein and Sue Napier, along with industry consultant Robert Eastment, returned last Friday from a ten day inspection of pulp mills in Finland, Brazil and Chile.

During the tour, pulp mills were inspected, industry and related sector briefings were received and community members were consulted. There were also meetings with equipment supplier, Andritz, and mill designer Pöyry who both provided a comprehensive overview of their business and involvement in the proposed Tasmanian pulp mill and an analysis of the pulp market.

As a result of the tour, all members of the delegation are now better informed regarding the opportunities that a pulp mill will provide as well as the challenges that may be faced, and as a result are well equipped to participate in the debate when parliament resumes next week to consider whether the Gunns proposal should be approved.

Members of the delegation are now well prepared with first-hand knowledge of the potential positive and negative impacts of modern pulp mills.

A comprehensive report on the fact finding trip will be publicly released when finalised at the end of this week.
