Alderman Jeff Briscoe’s motion to conduct an elector poll about the proposed pulp mill is to be debated at the Hobart City Council meeting on Monday 13 August 2007.
Alderman Briscoe will be seeking HCC support in getting an elector poll about the pulp mill issue at the same time as the Council October elections.
“If we leave aside the far from ideal assessment process, the water needs of this pulp mill must concern all Tasmanians. Water supply is a core function for local councils and providing water to this mill at a give away price must concern all of those who believe in water conservation.”
“The effect on Brand Tasmania, as indicated by tourism operators could lead to a downturn of tourists to Hobart and thus will impact on one of Tasmania’s top tourist icon – Salamanca Market”. “A pulp mill poll be taken at the same time as the local council elections would save money and help restore our national reputation”
Alderman Briscoe’s motion seeks an urgent report about the mechanics and cost of conducting a poll and means of gaining the support of the other 28 Councils” So far the State Government hasn’t responded to Alderman Briscoe’s elector poll move. “I would have thought the Tourism Minister would have at least a comment”
