GARRETT TOLD OF FORESTS DISASTER IF PULP MILL BUILT
FEDERAL Shadow Minister for the Environment, Peter Garrett, was today told that the proposed Tamar Valley pulp mill will be a disaster for the state’s forests if it proceeds.
Mr Garrett met with representatives of the Wilderness Society is Hobart this morning.
“We asked Mr Garrett to take a stand on behalf of his party against the pulp mill because of the massive environmental impacts of its appetite and waste on our air, ocean, forests, wildlife and climate,” said Wilderness Society campaigner Geoff Law after the meeting.
“We described the proposed pulp mill’s dependence on native forests,” said Mr Law. “We explained to Mr Garrett that the impacts of the mill’s colossal appetite for forests have not been assessed.”
“We showed him a photograph of the destruction of native forests on precipitous slopes in north-east Tasmania and explained how the pulp mill will accelerate that kind of logging, thereby exacerbating climate change.”
“We said it was wrong for taxpayers’ funds to be used to prop up oldgrowth logging in Tasmania rather than on ensuring a sustainable future for the industry in places where forestry is legitimate.”
Mr Law said that Mr Garrett was attentive and responsive throughout the meeting.
“We’re hoping for some positive outcomes for Tasmania’s natural environment when Mr Garrett announces his party’s position on the pulp mill and on Tasmania’s irreplaceable forests.”
