Young Greens conference
Evan Hunter
The Tasmanian Young Greens are holding their first ever conference on June 30 and July 1 at Sirens in Victoria St, Hobart.
Speakers include:
Greens Parliamentary Leader Senator Bob Brown, Tasmanian Greens Member for Franklin Nick McKim, Wilderness Society Pulp Mill Campaigner Paul Oosting, Huon Valley Environment Centre spokesperson Will Mooney, Global Young Greens organiser and Greens candidate for Bass Tom Millen, Wilderness Society fundraising expert Amanda Sully, former Greens on Campus organiser and accomplished media attention-grabber Ben Bartl, and Young Greens organiser Evan Hunter. Confirmation of several other speakers – with appropriate correction to the gender balance – is imminent.
Topics covered over the weekend will include:
Gunns’ proposed pulp mill at Long Reach in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley, the campaign to protect Tasmania’s high conservation value forests, climate change, green and sustainable living and design, Indigenous Tasmania, fundraising, threats to water in Tasmania, threatened species, Global Young Greens, effective media campaigning, the Young Greens’ Federal Election strategy, the basics of Tasmanian and Australian parliamentary systems, how to set up a Young Greens group in your region, the Green Party in Tasmania, and much more.
Encouraging and empowering young people to participate in politics.
The intention of this conference is not to have two days of lectures, but rather to bring together young people from across Tasmania and encourage and empower them to participate in politics and democracy – even if they are not old enough to vote. Neither will this event be merely a ‘talkfest’ – there will be groundbreaking, constructive outcomes coming out of this conference such as election strategies and Young Greens groups in Launceston and elsewhere. This will be a weekend of learning, sharing, creativity, fun, meeting people and making friends!
The Hobart Young Greens extend a special invitation to young people from the North, Northwest, West Coast, Far South and East Coast – we can help you set up Young Greens groups in your home towns and regions. Accommodation will be available for young people travelling to Hobart from other parts of Tasmania. For transport to Hobart, check out http://www.redlinecoaches.com.au/ – we recommend arriving in Hobart on Friday June 29 and departing on Sunday evening or Monday morning.
So if you are young and interested in some or all of the topics and speakers mentioned above, come to our conference – we welcome you, we need you. We invite you to get involved and help make a difference to Tasmania and the world we Tasmanians share with more than six billion others.
To cover some costs there is a charge of $10 for students/concession and $15 for wage earners. However, if you wish to attend the conference but cannot afford this please let us know. Please contact Hannah Aulby on 0427 079 729 for more information or to reserve your place, or to arrange a billet, or email her: hannah.aulby@gmail.com
