How to fight the mill …
Peter Cundall, Ald. Janie Finlay, Tim Thorne Directors, Campaign for a Clean Tamar Valley
The mill’s proponents have a lot more resources, including access to Tasmanian taxpayers’ funds, but if all those who are opposed to the mill proposal put in what they can afford, we should be able to raise enough to make a difference.
PETER Cundall, Alderman Janie Finlay, Tim Thorne and a few other residents of Launceston and the Tamar Valley have decided that one useful way to help public awareness of the dangers to the environment and the economy of the Tamar Valley, and to the health and safety of its residents, posed by the proposed pulp mill under the assessment procedures that currently apply would be to conduct a Public Relations campaign utilising the mass electronic media.
To this end it is calculated at least $20,000 will be needed. A prominent Tasmanian Public Relations firm, whose principals are sympathetic to the aims of the Campaign for a Clean Tamar Valley (CCTV), has agreed to provide its services at a discount.
A trust fund has been set up, into which donations towards the cost of the campaign can be paid by sending a cheque or money order to Campaign for a Clean Tamar Valley, PO Box 160, Launceston.
While there are other ways of opposing the mill as and where it is proposed, including approaches to political leaders, legal challenges and public education on the dangers, and while other organisations are doing a great job in those areas, such a PR campaign, concentrating on a few key issues and utilising especially commercial television, is seen as an essential adjunct to these.
The mill’s proponents have a lot more resources, including access to Tasmanian taxpayers’ funds, but if all those who are opposed to the mill proposal put in what they can afford, we should be able to raise enough to make a difference.
