I’m no fan of Leo

Since Leo Schofield was hired by The Hobart Mercury to contribute his weekly gush of self promotion and condescension about “Tassie”, he’s at least become a talking or rather a rallying point for those who can actually write without using the first person up to seven times (his record) in one paragraph.
Leo is of course Editor at Large for the APC Packer, Sydney obsessed, Australian Gourmet Traveller, which puts out an ill informed guide to eating out in Oz every year which is always spectacularly out of date when it comes to Tasmania.

The AGT’s sister publication, The Bulletin, ran a rave by Leo about mainlanders and their acumen and good taste (not supported by the photographic evidence) in buying Tasmanian properties cheap. Leo, as one of them, naturally feels it’s a good thing. On the very next page of this issue, with some irony intended, Charles Woolley meditates on those same chancers and comes to rather different conclusions!

Leo was so incensed by Woolley’s presumption that his Saturday (18th November) piece in The Hobart Mercury reached new heights of self-regard and indignation. It makes unintentionally wonderful reading — for a hissy fit — and reminds us that Packers and the Murdochs alike share a fondness for editors who can’t — or won’t edit !

A simple act of judgement would have protected all Tasmanians from Leo’s bombast long since. Perhaps now Leo’s joined up all the dots, we can expect a merciful end to his advertisements for himself?
