hampshire in passing

Posted on

nick fitzgerald
sea of blue
wavecrests tinged red
with untempered growth

bitumen and railroad
the new spirits of this land
soulless snakes

in spring poison rains
from steel birds

they buzz like blowflies

in autumn
they
             fly
                        higher

dropping balls of fire
the sun turns red

tree-bones in ritual piles
a lignified ossuary

the totem of this land
a raven
craaaaaaarrk

an antarctic beech
lonely, roadside
gazes upon the glaucous sea

remembers the deft step
of black feet
before great snakes came
and fire birds flew
