Trash to treasure

Posted on

ARTISTS from the local community are set to dazzle us with their creativity and ingenuity, showing how waste can be re-thought, re-used and re-created into works of art. The annual Art From Trash exhibition, with nearly 50 exhibits, officially opens Friday at 5.30pm in the Waterside Pavilion at Mawson Place.

“Every year Resource Work Cooperative, the owners and operators of the South Hobart Tip Shop provides an opportunity for members of the local community to exhibit in our annual Art From Trash exhibition. The exhibition has been run for over ten years with increasing interest and participation from the community and aims to educate people on how to minimise waste. It is open to people of all ages and experience but all the art works must be made from materials reincarnated from rubbish previously discarded, salvaged, destined for landfill or purchased from a tipshop” spokesperson for Resource Lisa Flack explains.

“Resource is a successfully run, local cooperative. We are devoted to the reduction and redirection of waste within the community through the salvaging of resources from the South Hobart Tip Site. Resource has created employment for 25 local people through the salvaging and resale of discarded goods and materials. We have two retail outlets, one on site at the South Hobart Tip site and our Collectables shop at 11 Elizabeth St in Hobart”, explains Lisa.

The year’s exhibition features work from St Michaels Collegiate Junior School in South Hobart. All Southern Tasmanian Schools have been invited to visit this year’s exhibition and the Tip Shop to consider what they could contribute to next year’s exhibition. The exhibition runs from 11th August to 16th August, opening hours 10am until 5.00pm in the Waterside Pavilion, at Mawson Place.
