Pulp poisons and the Tamar
ABC Online
A national environment group says there will be the high level of pollution from proposed Gunns pulp mill in northern Tasmania. The National Toxics Network (NTN) says contamination from landfill near the proposed Bell Bay pulp mill is likely to reach the Tamar River. In a report set for release today, author Lee Bell predicts landfill chemicals will leak into groundwater, then nearby Williams Creek before reaching the river. “What it means for the Tamar River is, if you like, just one more nail in the coffin,” he said. “It’s another industrial impact, it’s another contamination source that will affect its water quality over time and affect the recreational uses of the river.” Mr Bell says the findings will form the basis of a submission to the Resource Planning and Development Commission.
