MEANDER DAM RALLY AND MARCH
TOMORROW, SATURDAY 15TH JULY 06
Community rally to highlight illegal construction of the Meander Dam
The Wilderness Society will participate in a community organised rally and march to protest the illegal construction of the Meander Dam. The event is organised by Friends of the Meander River and will feature as speakers; local resident Sandy Tiffin, Greens MHA’s Kim Booth and Tim Morris and The Wilderness Society’s Vica Bayley.
Despite failing approval from the RPDC, not receiving the financial backing of local farmers and not having the required Forest Practices Plans to permit landclearing native vegetation, the Tasmanian government is footing the bill and pushing ahead with the dam. The “development at all costs” project sets a sad precedent in the lead up to intense debate and RPDC deliberation over Gunns’ pulpmill and the Ralph’s Bay development.
