TASMANIANS could be fined $500 if woodheater smoke is visible for more than 5m from a chimney or flue under new regulations. Environment Minister Paula Wriedt yesterday announced the release of draft air-quality regulations and a regulatory impact statement to control backyard burning and the sale and operation of woodheaters. She said the impact statement provided a detailed explanation of how the regulations would work and their likely impacts. Ms Wriedt said the regulations would provide, for the first time, an objective standard for smoke nuisance from heaters and fireplaces.
