PRESS RELEASE
BATTLING THE BASS STRAITFour adventurers will cross the Bass strait to highlight the plight of the tasmanian devil suffering from Devil Facial Tumour Disease.
Tasmanian devils, the largest marsupial carnivore on the planet, are under threat from this terrible disease. Tel Williams visited Tasmania earlier this year and participated in Devil Day (an educational event hosted by the Devils in Danger Club and Something Wild Wildlife Sanctuary).
The kayak group decided to paddle for a cause and have taken on board the devil as their champion.
Together, the combined efforts of these paddlers have paddled almost the entire West Australian coastline, this new adventure marking their first national expedition.
The kayakers will embark on their mammoth journey on the 1stth January from Port Welshpool in Victoria and will arrive in Hobart by the 27th January weather permitting.
“We’ve been in some pretty scary situations in the past, caught in harsh storms and forced to paddle all night and bumped and followed by sharks to name but a few’ said Tel, 47 from Ocean Reef
“We do have a fully prepared risk plan and have contacted the appropriate authorities of our expedition” said Les, 49 from Canning Vale.
Something Wild Wildlife Sanctuary in Tasmania, are currently breeding devils to ensure captive populations and are major sponsors of the expedition. All monies raised will go towards the breeding program at Something Wild and research into DFTD. www.somethingwild.com.au
