Unlawful!
AFTER many moons communing with my soul in Goa, I returned to Tasmania yesterday and immediately caught up with my good friend Bacchus No-Smoke.
Bacchus tells me that in my absence, the Hobart City Council decided to cage revellers at Knopwood’s Retreat in Salamanca Place on the two Friday nights before Christmas, and that the Council approved a ban on drinking alcohol in Hobart’s parks this summer, from 9pm to 9am — a ban extensively reported in the local media.
Bacchus had a drink with a mate on Council staff last night, and the mate told him that Lord Mayor Rob Valentine is sweating on a secret … that the ban is unlawful.
That’s right! The regulation hasn’t been gazetted, with the result that coppers can remove anyone making a nuisance in a park, as they always could, but they can’t stop anyone else from drinking in a park.
