Public Art Project Examines Tasmanian Tourism
A new art installation at Mawson’s Place explores the blissful indulgence of Tasmanian arts tourism and its impact on the state. For her exhibition Bliss Me, artist Tiyan Baker has spent time with tourists, locals, artists, hospitality workers and academics, assembling a range of perspectives on the topic. Presented as a series of documentary style interviews within the installation, the work delves into the nuances of Tasmania’s tourist industry and what it means to the people involved. Exploring the positives, negatives and complexity of Tasmania’s world class arts experiences, premium food and drink products, luxury accommodation and pristine nature.
“With Tasmania’s rising popularity for arts tourism, I’m interested in what local artists, arts workers and tourists here are experiencing through that change. Especially considering the current climate of declining political and fiscal support for the arts in Australia, how is it that this commercial interest is flourishing?”, says artist Tiyan Baker.
Bliss Me is presented by Constance Artist-Run Initiative (ARI), a local organisation supporting emerging and experimental artists.
Opening Event 6pm, Wednesday 24th October 2018
