Polling has shown strong support for the Greens’ policies of legalising cannabis and increasing Newstart.

Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim said the polling showed that voters were far more progressive than their Liberal and Labor representatives.

“The people of Tasmania are willing to back progressive policies,” Senator McKim said.

“They can see that the law and order approach to cannabis has failed.”

“They know that people are doing it tough on Newstart and in low wage jobs.”

Greens candidate for Braddon Jarrod Edwards said he was proud to stand for a party putting forward a progressive vision.

“Minor drug offences can have significant impacts on young people in our community,” Mr Edwards said.

“With a drug charge on their record, in can affect their employment, their ability to travel and their ability to purchase or rent a house.”

“It’s been more than 20 years since Newstart was raised in real terms. This has caused so much unnecessary hardship.”

“Every Tasmanian deserves a decent standard of living which is why I support increasing the minimum wage and pensions in addition to Newstart.”
