When the Lindisfarne Football Club plays the Claremont Football Club it is always a passionate bout. On 23 June it will be no exception, with Lindisfarne playing in honour of former player and Club Legend Alex Harris who tragically passed away of brain cancer last year at just 19 years of age.
During his illness and after his passing, Alex and his family have been supported by CanTeen. CanTeen supports young people living with cancer and their families. Law firm Hall Payne Lawyers have generously offered to be Lindisfarne’s goal sponsor for the day, kicking in $100 to CanTeen for each goal kicked in the seniors match.
Mark Wiggins, CEO of Hall Payne said “Hall Payne Lawyers believes in people and community and are proud to be able to support the Lindisfarne Football Club as they remember Alex Harris whom was such an integral and important member of their community. We are humbled to be able to support Canteen in the vital work they do in communities round Australia.”
Alex was a mad footy fan and he was rarely seen without his treasured LFC hoodie. He loved playing with his mates at Lindisfarne, with his dad Greg driving him to footy every week. After being diagnosed with the illness at age 14, Alex continued to amaze all around him with his determination, enduring two years of chemotherapy and having to learn to walk again. When chemo kept Alex sick at home, he would constantly be looking on Facebook for the scores of the Lindisfarne games.
When his illness forced him to stop playing football at Lindisfarne, Alex was devastated. However his former coach Matthew Howell encouraged Alex to stay within the team and to take up a role as team trainer under the guidance of Senior trainer “Clarkey”. A challenge Alex embraced.
Mum, Trudi Harris said “Alexander met every day with a smile on his face, never giving up and even on his bad days he thought of others. He was a true hero to everyone that knew him.”
