As part of the 2018 Tasmanian Heritage Festival, the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) are inviting Tasmanians to head off on an adventure into the unknown with the special festival-only event, ‘Destination Mars’.

Clarendon, the magnificent heritage site in Evandale, will serve as a backdrop for an overnight adventure of storytelling and adventure with Mars One candidate Josh Richards.

Visitors are invited to bring their tents and camp out at the sprawling river-side property and hear from physicist, Explosives Engineer, Soldier, Comedian, and Astronaut Candidate Josh Richards who, in 2012, was selected from over 200,000 initial applicants to be short listed for a one-way mission to Mars in 2031.

Josh will talk about the science of the mars mission in a down-to-earth manner, from the complexities of space engineering, growing food, and even the personal ethical decisions faced with the mission.

Josh will be joined by speakers Michael Booth from the Astronomical Society of Tasmania, and Patsy Cameron, a Tasmanian Aboriginal community leader who will talk about Aboriginal astronomy and Dreamtime stories.

Managing Director of the National Trust Tasmania, Matthew Smithies, is thrilled to see the heritage space utilised in such a new and exciting way, stating.

“We always look for ways to bring in new audiences to our heritage spaces and to invite people to experience them in ways that they possibly would not of conceived of before, I can’t think of amore perfect setting for this new-age scientific evening than this old-age property”.

Food and beverage stalls will be onsite, with space for tents, the Trust is encouraging everyone to bring along their telescope if they have one!
