• A complex area of low pressure extends over Tasmania bringing potentially heavy falls and damaging winds.
• Rainfall over the east, southeast and central parts of the state is expected to be 20-50 mm today with isolated falls in excess of 60mm.
• On Friday, the east, southeast and central parts are expected to receive 30-60 mm, locally 60-80 mm. Rain will begin to ease during the afternoon.
• Rapid rivulet rises are possible in areas that will experience the higher rainfall totals.
• A Flood Watch is current for the eastern half of Tasmania and flood warnings will be issued if/when required at www.bom.gov.au/tas/warnings/
• A Road Weather Alert is current for the east and central parts of the state for reduced visibility in heavier rainfall and water on roads.
• A Severe Weather Warning is current for damaging winds as strong southeasterly winds are expected to develop over the east, south and west coast this afternoon, extending over much of the state later tonight and early tomorrow morning. For details see http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDT21037.shtml
• Winds are expected to reach 60-70 km/h in the east and central parts this afternoon with gusts potentially reaching 100 km/h.
• Highest rainfall totals for Saturday are around 5 mm in the south, and the west and east coasts of the state.

• The record daily rainfall total for Hobart in May is 47.0 mm.
• 2-day rainfall records for Hobart in May is 68.5 mm on 30-31 May 1905.
• Hobart has had 7 instances of 2-day totals in May of 50 mm since 1900, most recently in 1988.
• Year-to-date rainfall has been below average on the east coast from Hobart northwards. Most other areas of the state have been close to average.
• Tasmania has had a warm summer and autumn.
