BRIGHTON Council has welcomed the new Bridgewater Bridge funding pledges from the State and Federal Governments.

Brighton Mayor Tony Foster said the announcements yesterday, with confirmation due in tonight’s Federal Budget, meant that planning now underway could be completed and construction commenced as soon as possible.

Cr Foster said Brighton Council had been calling for the replacement Bridgewater Bridge for a decade or more and had lobbied both Governments to fund the project.

“This had paid off and both the State and Federal Governments should be applauded.”

Cr Foster commended Deputy Premier Jeremy Rockliff and Tasmanian Liberal Senator Richard Colbeck who confirmed the full funding commitment yesterday.

“The Bridgewater Bridge is a vital link in the north-south transport network, and the new bridge should meet Tasmania’s requirements for years to come.

“Importantly, provision for light rail is being maintained via the existing bridge and this retains an important public transport option for the future.

“The existing Bridge was built in the 1940s and is in need of urgent replacement because of the restrictions it places on vehicles travelling on the Midland Highway, our most important road freight corridor. Add to this the almost 20,000 vehicles that cross each day, traffic bottle-necks and other issues, means the Bridge is seriously out of date.

“So, this decision is not only much needed, with the efficiency, convenience, investment and employment it will bring, it is heartily welcomed by the Brighton municipality and should be by all Tasmanians,” Cr Foster said.
