• A severe weather warning for damaging winds is current for all of Tasmania with strong northwesterly winds expected to develop this afternoon ahead of a vigorous cold front crossing this evening.
• Damaging winds gusts of 100 km/h develop during the afternoon; however, the strongest winds are expected from around 5pm to 9pm as the cold front crosses. During this time, winds are expected to increase to an average of 70 km/h over much of Tasmania, with peak gusts in excess of 110 km/h over the southern half of the state.
• Elevated areas above 400 metres may experience gusts in excess of 120 km/h. Winds are expected to ease from the west behind the cold front later tonight as winds shift west to southwesterly.
• Storm force winds are expected about southern coastal waters of Tasmania before the front passes this evening. Gale Force winds are expected about all other coastal waters today, and Small Craft Wind Alerts are current for both the Central Plateau and South West lakes.
• All current warnings issued will be reviewed and updated regularly at www.bom.gov.au/tas/warnings/
• Also note that a significant rain event may develop across eastern and southern Tasmania later this week, with over 100mm of rainfall possible during Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
