Detention damages mental and physical health

Yet Australia still has 1800 people including almost 150 children who have been held in on-and off-shore sites for up to 5 years. Medical students say they cannot stand by any longer and watch the harms to health being done in name without speaking up.

Medical students and their colleagues will meet at 12 noon on Saturday 7th April in Hyde Park North (near St James station) to hear speeches from psychiatrist Peter Young, GP Barri Phataford, refugee and doctor Nadine Shema and human rights lawyer George Newhouse. Paediatrician David Isaacs will host the event, which has been organised by Carrie Lee, Kevin Chan, Ahshvini Cenan, Adele Evans and Alanna Maycock.

Participants will meet on Cockatoo Island at 4pm for a group photo in front of Ai Weiwei’s striking art installation “The Law of the Journey”.
