Mary Webb’s first single from her new album ‘Love like planets’ is called ‘Gecko Fingers’ and indeed Mary weaves a web of artistry with her new album, like the Gecko, Mary is a master of vocalisations.
Mary will be bringing these amazing vocalisations when she performs live in Tassie, a place she visits to catch up with friends, once or twice a year.
With parents that worked in an orchestra (her father as a conductor) and one brother playing the cello it seemed Mary was destined for a musical career. Mary’s sister is also into the arts but the visual ones, she is responsible for designing the covers of Mary’s albums. It is about the relationship between sisters, the ‘calm and the conflict’ that Gecko Finger’s explores.
Recently, I chatted with Mary and asked about her songwriting process. She tells me that sometimes that supposed ‘tap on the shoulder’ by the muse might in fact be the end of a long process of writing. Of course. other times a spark out of nowhere seems to put the whole process of creativity instantly into motion.
Erring on the side of caution is one of Mary’s trademarks. A song ‘hoarder’ Mary tells me she keeps lots of songs at different levels of construction in the hope that one day she will be in the right space to complete the song.
Mary performs in Hobart on Fri 6 April at Willie’s Apple Shed from 6.30 to 8.30 pm.
