Good morning, and welcome back to The Briefing.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will present the latest Closing the Gap report to Parliament today, while fending off claims the government has abandoned the strategy to address Indigenous disadvantage.
The Close the Gap campaign criticised government policy and direction when it met in Canberra on Thursday, saying in its 10-year review that the strategy “was effectively abandoned after five years”, and that governments had failed to challenge “the idea of dedicated health expenditure being a waste of taxpayer funds”. Labor senator and Yawuru man Pat Dodson criticised Turnbull for leaving the campaign review event early, saying it was “indicative of the deafness, of the absolute derision, and the contempt which this government is meting out to Aboriginal people”.
