Today’s announcement (Sun Feb 4) by Will Hodgman to break Tasmania’s link with the NEM is a sensible policy option for Tasmania.

‘In the absence of an agreed national energy transition plan, the state Liberal’s policy has the potential to build on states advantage.” Said Leanne Minshull, Director of The Australia Institute Tasmania.

Premier Hodgman’s comments that Tasmania is currently exposed to higher costs cause by power station closure or system failures interstate, aligns with a report from The Australia Institute on securing Tasmania’s energy security ( http://www.tai.org.au/content/securing-tasmania%E2%80%99s-energy-future ) – How Tasmania can become energy self-reliant and an exporter of renewable energy, released last year.

“The Australia institute report last year, outlined the disadvantage to Tasmania of continuing to tie itself to a national system. If Tasmania plays to its strengths it can become a clean energy superpower and take control of energy costs for households and businesses.”
