The AEU welcomes Premier Will Hodgman’s announcement of a new TasTAFE CEO from 2018 and we look forward to working with her.
“It is pleasing to read that Jenny Dodd’s strength is around compliance, as this is a continual major concern for our members,” said TasTAFE President Damian Von Samorzewski.
“Ms Dodd has a significant task ahead of her in rebuilding trust in TasTAFE among the public, industry and staff,”
“It is also pleasing to note the Premier’s comments in the announcement that Ms Dodd looks forward to ‘working with and listening to current TasTAFE staff’.
“We have been seeking open and transparent dialogue with management for many years and whilst there was an improvement when interim CEO Mark Sayer arrived there is still a lot more to be achieved in this area.
“Our major concern is that teachers are continually asked by managers to deliver training and support with limited and inadequate resources and that there is a reduction in contact time with students, based on meeting budget rather than ensuring students are provided the broad range of skills and knowledge required.
“All this impacts on the ability of TasTAFE to produce graduates that are job ready, and that meet industry expectations.
“Our members do their very best for Tasmanians, and do so in very trying conditions, but with more support they could improve the quality of education that students receive.
“Notably in the Premier’s announcement, TasTAFE will have another corporate restructure. Hopefully this time it will be done to benefit the organisation, rather than the CEO’s KPIs.
“Finally, the AEU would like to thank interim CEO Mr Mark Sayer for his efforts in trying times, he has done his best for staff and the Tasmanian community.
“There is an incredible amount of work to do for the new CEO and we wish her the very best and look forward to working with her,” said Mr Samorzweski.
