Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will tomorrow urge states and territories to hand over photos of every licensed driver in their jurisdiction to build a national facial recognition database.
Turnbull said the database, to be used by authorities to scan crowds at airports, was needed to “further advance and harmonise our response to the threat of terrorism”. A similar scheme in the United States was found to breach privacy regulations and frequently misidentify women and African-Americans, while a Senate inquiry continues to investigate multiple large-scale technological failures by the Australian government …
