Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has told 2GB radio he was headbutted by a “Yes” same-sex marriage campaigner in Hobart.
“A fellow sung out at me: ‘Hey Tony’. I turned around, there was a chap wearing a ‘Vote Yes’ badge”, Abbott said. “He said ‘I wanna shake your hand’. I went over to shake his hand, and then he headbutted me. He wasn’t very good at it, I’ve got to say, but he did make contact”. While Abbott did not report the incident to police, Tasmania Police have issued a call for information. Leading “Yes” campaigners were quick to condemn the incident, with Australian Marriage Equality, opposition leader Bill Shorten and Sydney state MP Alex Greenwich releasing statements to that effect
