Tasmanians United for Marriage Equality has welcome Tasmanian Premier, Will Hodgman’s, rejection of claims by his colleagues that marriage equality would affect what children are taught in schools.
When asked about the claims made by his Liberal colleagues, including State Liberal Minister Guy Barnett and Federal Liberal Senator Eric Abetz, that there will be “radical sex education” in schools if marriage equality is enacted, Premier Hodgman said:
“There will be no change to government policy with respect to the education programs that support Tasmanians in our school communities, so that is not the case.”
TUME spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said it is time for the ‘no’ campaign to be called out for its scare tactics.
“Premier Hodgman’s statement should be enough to bring this disingenuous scare campaign to an end.”
“Tasmanians heard this claim repeatedly in the 1990s when we debated decriminalising homosexuality. It came to nothing then and they will come to nothing now.”
