Prominent Hobart businessman Richard Fader was yesterday elected Chair of the Tasmanian Polar Network.
The Tasmanian Polar Network is the peak body for Tasmania’s Antarctic sector, representing the scientific research organisations, local, state and Commonwealth government agencies and the many Tasmanian businesses that operate in the sector.
Mr Fader has served on the TPN executive committee since 2002 and is well known for his interests in the maritime industry. He has provided food and technical stores for the Australian, French, Italian, Korean and Chinese Antarctic research vessels and stations, sending hundreds of tonnes of produce to feed expeditioners and ships crews in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.
‘I am honoured to have been entrusted to represent our member’s interests at an exciting time for the Antarctic sector’, he said. ‘Just this week it was announced that Tasmanian Government and Macquarie Point Corporation are backing the proposed Antarctic and science precinct at Macquarie Point’, he added.
‘The Antarctic and Southern Ocean sector has been a long-term winner for Tasmania and together with the members of the TPN I will be working to make sure that this continues’.
Richard Fader is a member of the Institute of Company Directors and the Domestic Commercial Vessel Industry Advisory committee of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
Mr Fader thanked the previous Chair, Karen Rees, who stepped down from the role to take up the position of Director of Antarctic and Maritime Industries within the Department of State Growth.
Ms Rees said she believes the TPN is going from strength to strength and is looking forward to working with the TPN in her new role.
‘I am passionate about the potential of the Antarctic sector in Tasmania and my new role will allow me to continue to drive growth and build Tasmania’s reputation as a leading Antarctic gateway’, she said.
