Citizenship changes being pursued by the government may not have been requested by security agencies, despite immigration minister Peter Dutton’s insistence the overhaul is needed for national security reasons.
People applying for citizenship would need to pass university-level English tests and wait longer for approval – moves Dutton insists are needed to “make sure we’re serious about citizenship and giving it to those people who are most deserving”.
