Musician Josh Pyke returns to Tasmania for his ’10 Years Of Memories & Dust’ tour, a celebration of ten years of making music which, he says has been overwhelmingly positive. After the tour Josh is taking a break from touring for a while for a more settled existence with his young family. He will still be making music but without the long tours away from home, so essentially he will be Joshua free!
Tasmania has always been included on Josh’s tours and this time is no different. Josh always loves coming to Tassie which he calls ‘stunning with ‘a cultural and artistic presence’. He’s pretty familiar with Hobart by now as well as Devonport and Launceston and has appeared at the Falls Festival a number of times, on the last occasion he took the whole family along.
And it is with family in mind that Josh has decided to stay based closer to home, this time producing for other artists and songs for TV and film. One of the first projects he’s working on are songs for Justine Clarke’s children’s program on ABC TV.
For Josh writing songs have a mixed creation, sometimes it might be a matter of picking up the guitar and ending up with a song quite quickly, or the longer more protracted process of initial inspiration such as that experienced while pushing his young son in his pram and the full story not falling into place until sometime later as he observed the same son playing around in the garden, now grown, from being pushed to independence as he explores the garden and just as the garden grows so does the child.
Josh says everyday life inspires his writing, from reading books, he has been particularly inspired by ‘East of Eden’ which found its way into a song, and the non-fiction events behind a tome like Moby Dick. His own autobiographical musing also inspire his songs and ironically it is sometimes these songs which contain very specific detail of his own life that he finds resonate with his audience and that they identify as being their story too, such is the universal themes of music.
