A vigil for Hamed Shamshiripour, whose life was cruelly cut short on Manus Island, was held in his home city in the south west of Iran yesterday.

“Despite the hasty public denials, the PNG police cannot rule out foul play. There needs to be a proper independent investigation,” said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.

“There is a long history of negligence, even before his tragic death on Manus, for which the Australian government should be accountable. Hamed was brought to Australia for medical treatment in 2015. He had been injured and traumatised in the attacks on the Manus detention centre that killed Reza Barati. He should never have been sent back to Manus Island.”

Protests calling for Justice for Hamed will be held in Sydney, today, Wednesday (details below), and in Melbourne and Brisbane on Friday.
