Vigils will be held across the country today to mark four years since mandatory offshore immigration detention was introduced by former prime minister Kevin Rudd.
While the Manus Island detention centre is set to close in October after being ruled unconstitutional by the Papua New Guinea Supreme Court, the fate of the 2000 detainees on Manus and Nauru remains unclear. The centres have cost almost $4.9 billion to build and run since 2013, and five parliamentary and immigration department inquiries have found widespread evidence of physical and sexual abuse.
