Hundreds of thousands of retail, pharmacy, fast food and hospitality workers have taken a pay cut after the Fair Work Commission’s ruling to reduce Sunday penalty rates came into effect on the weekend.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten and trade unions seized on the milestone, campaigning outside bars, cafes and RSL clubs and promoting a list of businesses that have pledged not to implement the penalty rates cut. At a union rally in Caboolture on Saturday, Shorten repeated his promise to legislatively repeal the decision if Labor win the next election and accused Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of being indifferent to people affected by the cuts.
