Legislation’s defeat means Government can now work with Labor and the industry
Strategic Growth Plan outlines the way forward
The Liberal Government has the chance to work constructively with Labor and the forest industry to progress its own Strategic Growth Plan.
“The forestry legislation defeated today in the Legislative Council did not have the support of the vast majority of the forest industry,” Shadow Resources Minister David Llewellyn said.
“Even if Labor abstained from the vote, the Bill would have been defeated by the independent members of the Upper House.
“The bill was a political wedge that would have put markets at risk by restarting conflict in our forests.
“The Government now has a clear choice to either be divisive or constructive.
“Will the Liberals work with Labor and the industry to see the Government’s own Strategic Growth Plan implemented?
“It’s an excellent piece of work that deserves the Government’s attention.
“Guy Barnett was full of threats about what would happen if the legislation was voted down. Now it’s been defeated, what’s the Minister’s next move?
“Will he continue to play politics or work with the industry on a positive way forward?”
