The government’s “Gonski 2.0” schools funding reforms have passed into law after securing 10 Senate crossbench votes.
Crossbenchers approved the package after securing concessions, including an extra $4.9 billion flowing to schools over a decade and an independent body supervising the allocation of resources. Despite securing every concession demanded of the government, the Greens voted against the package due to internal divisions and opposition from the Australian Education Union. The AEU and the National Catholic Education Conference have announced plans to campaign against the new funding arrangements before the next federal election.
