Public and catholic schools face cuts under Liberals
Education Minister should be fighting for the best possible deal
Jeremy Rockliff admits he is “disappointed” the deal isn’t as good as what was promised
New figures reveal just how bad the education funding deal put forward by the Liberals would be for Tasmania.
Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne said the Hodgman Government is cheering for a deal that’s bad news for Tasmanian schools.
“The deal put on the table by the Liberals is a big cut compared to what was originally promised,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“And new figures released by the Parliamentary Budget Office show Tasmania’s public and catholic schools are set to be hit hard over the next ten years.
“The figures project public schools will be $88.6 million worse off over the next decade, while Tasmania’s catholic schools will be $35 million worse off.
“Whichever way you look at it, the Turnbull Government’s education proposal is bad news for Tasmanian schools.
“Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff should put his energy into fighting for a better deal, instead of lobbying crossbench Senators.
“The Minister admits he is “disappointed” the deal is worse than what was originally promised by both sides of politics, but he’s rolled over anyway.
“We need a government that will fight harder for Tasmania’s fair share.”
